WASHINGTON D.C.: Reuters has reported that on 7th June, former Vice President Mike Pence will enter the race for the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
Pence, who refused to support former president Donald Trump's effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election, will launch his campaign with a video and a speech in the early nominating state of Iowa, Reuters added.
A staunch social conservative, Pence has distanced himself from his former boss since his election defeat, stressing that Trump's encouragement of the attack on the US Capitol on 6th January, 2021 endangered Pence and his family.
Currently, Trump leads the polls for Republican presidential candidate, which now has more than 10 declared candidates.
According to a RealClearPolitics average of polls, Pence's polling average in the Republican field was less than 4 percent, compared to Trump's 53 percent.
Pence has portrayed himself as an even-keeled and consensus-oriented alternative, while continuing to support some of Trump's policies.
In recent months, he has also toured mega-churches across the country to appeal more directly to evangelical Christians.
A former Indiana governor and a one-time Republican leader in the US House of Representatives, Pence will test if voters will support an establishment Republican, in a party where voters have increasingly turned to outsiders.
