BAGHDAD, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Iraq is coordinating with the Syrian government and Kurdish-led forces to control the Iraqi-Syrian border and prevent the infiltration of the extremist Islamic State (IS) militants into Iraq, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
Spokesman of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command Tahsin al-Khafaji told the INA that "work continues with the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces through the international coalition in the field of intelligence to pursue terrorists, prevent their infiltration, and arrest them."
Al-Khafaji stressed that the cooperation made the infiltration of the Iraqi borders difficult for terrorist groups.
"There is a strengthening of defensive lines on the border with Syria, where two defensive lines were established: the first led by the border guards, and the second led by the Iraqi army, in addition to concrete barriers and watchtowers," al-Khafaji told INA.
Iraq was actively seeking to strengthen security measures to monitor its roughly 600 km long border with Syria to prevent the infiltration of IS militants.
The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, its remnants have since melted into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
