NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar - According to a legal official, a court in Myanmar has sentenced former leader Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional six years in prison after finding her guilty of corruption.
After the military overthrew her elected administration and imprisoned her in February 2021, she had previously been given an 11-year prison sentence for sedition, corruption, and other offenses at earlier trials.
Suu Kyi, 77, was found guilty of leasing government-owned land at a reduced price and mishandling funds from the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, an organization she formed to promote health and education.
Her lawyers were prohibited from discussing the case with the public or the media, and the trial was held in secret with no access to either.
Suu Kyi was accused of abusing her position in the four corruption cases to rent state land at below-market rates and to construct a home using donations intended for charity causes.
She was given three-year sentences for each of the four crimes, but as three will be served consecutively, she will spend an additional six years behind bars.
She has refuted all of the allegations, and her attorneys plan to file an appeal.
